After High School

Before the shooting, Gayles had already committed to playing basketball at the University of Southern California (USC), one of the top programs in NCAA Division I basketball. Her decision to attend USC was a reflection of her immense promise as a player. Gayles had been recruited by several top schools, but USC offered a combination of top-tier competition and the opportunity to develop her skills further. She was highly anticipated to be a key player for USC’s women’s basketball team.

In the wake of the shooting, there were concerns about whether Gayles would be able to fulfill her commitment to USC. However, Gayles remained focused on her recovery and worked hard to regain her strength. Despite the odds, her mental fortitude and optimism shone through, and she vowed to return to the game she loved.
