Ms. Gina Schiaffo, Head Custodian at Monroe-Woodbury High School, was November’s lucky winner for the Super Sub initiative! Before this long-time employee departed for her gift of free time, she showed Superintendent Norman the ropes. He suited up, grabbed his gear, and was ready to walk in her shoes.
Paired with fellow custodial team members Robert Morrison, Juan Vivas, and David Herb, Superintendent Norman quickly got to work. The day began by breaking down boxes in the loading dock to sweeping floors in both cafeterias. While some Crusaders recognized Superintendent Norman in the halls, others thought they were witnessing the training of a new employee.
Before the sun comes up and after students have gone for the day, M-W custodians are hard at work. While working alongside this team, Superintendent Norman used elbow grease to ensure he did as good a job as the custodial team does every day!
Ms. Gina Schiaffo, Head Custodian at Monroe-Woodbury High School, had an incredible start to November. She was the lucky winner of the Super Sub initiative and is now the first recipient of the Crusader Cause for Applause award for the 2025-2026 school year.
An M-W graduate who has worked for the district for more than 20 years, Gina treats everyone who enters the high school with respect. She has a contagious laugh and much-appreciated sense of humor. She is always first to offer a hand or a solution no matter what the task. Gina is committed to maintaining safe and healthy learning environments for all students.
Gina makes sure all faculty, staff and students feel important and heard through open communication. Her colleagues use adjectives such as flexible, adaptable, approachable, responsible and committed when describing her.
Assistant Principal Gina Matise, who nominated Gina for this special recognition, wrote: “Thank you for embodying the true spirit of an M-W Crusader. Every day you are committed to academic achievement and we are SO lucky to have you at the HS!”
Congratulations, Gina! 🎉💜
On December 10, 2025, MWHS welcomed back Michael Deleon from Steered Straight to present their premier student assembly on Alcohol & Drug Abuse Prevention...Stay In Your Lane.
This presentation uses current and salient accounts to demonstrate the real-life dangers associated with the misuse and abuse of alcohol, five categories of illicit drugs and over-the-counter substances.
Click Here to see BoE Student Representative Zoe Irabor's presentation at the November Board of Education meeting.
During Homeroom on Thursday, January 8 and Friday, January 9, we will be taking inventory of our Yondr pouches. All students were provided a pouch in September and are expected to have it physically checked on one of these two days.
Students who do not have their pouch will be provided a new pouch to be prepared as we move into Semester 2.
Just a reminder, each student may receive two pouches at no cost. A third pouch and beyond come with a $30 charge.
As we head into the winter months, we are reminding all M-W families to please have arrangements in place for your child in the event of a 2-hour delay, early dismissal or school closure, and to make sure your child is aware of these alternative plans.
SchoolMessenger is the district’s primary parent/guardian notification system. As always, parents and guardians may receive important notifications from the if there is a change to the student schedule or if school is closed, we will notify families by 5 a.m. via email, phone or text (if opted in, see instructions), based on preferences selected on the Parent/Student Portal. Information will also be posted on the district’s website, Facebook page and Instagram account.
Stay warm and Happy December, Crusaders! 📲☃️
The Exploring Teaching as a Profession class was fortunate to visit the Middle School and observe the elements of a lesson in action, thanks to the organizational efforts of Ms. Gina Dudgeon and the generous hosting of a variety of MS teachers who opened their learning spaces to our HS "pre-pre-service" educators. Thank you to the MS admin team and all the MS educators who hosted our students - they loved it, and were raving about how interactive and engaging you and your lessons were, and how much they enjoyed being able to witness it in person!
The class was also fortunate to visit Central Valley Elementary School and participate in a fun and collaborative activity with an enthusiastic 4th grade class, thanks to the the generous hosting and planning of Mrs. Mottola who opened her learning space once again to our HS "pre-pre-service" educators.
Thank you, Mrs. Mottola! The HS students LOVED working with your students, and were so excited to have been able to be part of a lesson with them. 💜
Our First Aid and CPR class gives students more than just certifications—it provides real-world skills that can make a life-saving difference. By practicing hands-on techniques and learning how to stay calm in emergencies, students gain confidence and experience that translate directly into the medical field. Whether they plan to pursue healthcare or simply want to be prepared for unexpected situations, this class offers valuable exposure to real-life scenarios and responsibilities. Recently, Mr. Vero's classes had the amazing opportunity of touring the Orange County 911 Center, visiting Touro Medical College, and learning about EMS from the Woodbury Volunteer Ambulance Corp. ♥️💜
Monroe-Woodbury High School sophomore Karlyn Fateman was nominated to attend the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Program (HOBY) at the University at Albany in June 2026. HOBY seminars bring students together from around the state, across different backgrounds, cultures and communities. The program allows students to embrace their individuality while developing their leadership capabilities through interactions with others. Students leave HOBY with the knowledge and passion needed to make a positive impact on the world around them.
Congratulations, Karlyn! 🎉💜
The Art Department received a private performance from artist William PK Carter, M-W Art Major Alumni, who is enrolled in a fellowship and showing at Ann Street Gallery in Newburgh.
They were also treated to a discussion by the artist on his process and work. It was an absolute delight for the department to see that many of the things William learned during his years at MW from Kindergarten through High School have helped him become the artist he is today.
William's show closed on November 23 with a performance of his For Sport or For Beauty, which illustrates the relationship between people with marginalized identities and the anxiety-informed “prey mentality.”
We are so proud of the work William has done! 🎭💜
Student Activities are in full swing at MWHS!
In conjunction with the Regional Food Bank, MWHS students will be working monthly to help distribute food on a bi-weekly basis to 72 community families. Students gathered after school on December 4 to prepare for our second month of distribution. This initiative allows students to earn volunteer hours while making a meaningful impact on our community.
The SADD club has been especially active this year with three officers on the SADD NYS Student Leadership Council (Samantha Berrio, Daniela Gunning, Julianna Fini) and Samantha Berrio attending the SADD National Leadership Summit at Georgia State University in July.
For the month of September, the students focused on National Suicide Prevention month, hosting a table at Open House for parents and students. The theme for the event was Be a Lifesaver, as parents wrote messages on post-its that were displayed on a banner.
In October, the students turned their attention to National Teen Driver Safety Week, partnering with Mr. Rob Kriner of the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Council of Orange County for a table event at the Senior Barbeque, prior to Pep Rally and Homecoming Weekend. Students played rounds of spin the wheel with Mr. Kriner, prompting questions about teen driver safety, and were also given the opportunity to try on the "drunk goggles" while performing various physical activities.
Finally, for Red Ribbon Week, the students created an MW GOES RED sign at the front entrance to the high school and recorded segments for the Morning Show. The SADD club members hosted table events during lunch periods throughout the week:
Monday: Shared information about Red Ribbon Week as well as drug and alcohol facts. Students solved puzzles in teams about the theme: Life is a Puzzle, Solve it Drug Free, and received red ribbons.
Tuesday: Students read and signed pledge cards. They also received stickers and red themed treats.
Wednesday: Seniors had the opportunity to pick up red chalk markers and ribbons to decorate their cars with safety messages.
Mrs. Martucci, the SADD Officers, and club members want to thank the high school students and staff for their participation in MW GOES RED, as participants donned red clothing and seniors wrote Red Ribbon Week themed messages on their car windows.
Next up for the SADD club: Assisting Mr. Kriner and ADAC for a Great American Smokeout table event during lunch periods and celebrating Giving Tuesday with a friendship bracelet-making table event during lunch periods. ♥️💜
The Business Department's Social Media Marketing and College Sports & Entertainment Marketing students got an unforgettable behind-the-scenes tour of MetLife Stadium. Highlights included exclusive access to the press box, game field, commissioners club, and coaches club. Students enjoyed lunch in the 50 Club and had a chance to meet Mr. Ron VanDeVeen, President & CEO of MetLife Stadium. It was an opportunity to experience a real-world look at marketing, operations, and the fan experience!
The MWHS Little Miracles program began the thankful season with a "What I Am Thankful For" arts & crafts party! Tiny hands and big smiles created turkeys and other festive crafts to share with family and friends with the assistance from our MWHS Crusaders. These decorations are sure to be the highlight of the season!

The Athletic Club held a Nitroball Tournament benefitting Our Father's Pantry. We had over 100 kids participate and collected 100 cans and food items to donate to the food pantry. The kids had a great time for a good cause! 🪩
From Our Father's Pantry:
“We're so grateful to you and the Athletic Club for your wonderful food donation to us! I was so surprised at the amount that you collected, and this past week we were able to give all of it away to our families in need. Thank you for your time and energy supporting us as we attempt to serve all of our food-insecure folks in Monroe-Woodbury”.
On November 12, 2025, Monroe-Woodbury’s FBLA Chapter held an induction ceremony welcoming all of their new members and inducting their new officers into the club. This ceremony helped recognize new members and exposed them to their first FBLA event. Members were called up one at a time to shake the hands of our chapter officers, officially welcoming them into the club.
Officers for the 2025-2026 school year were also recognized and were responsible for reading aloud major speeches in which they would recite lines that exemplify the duties and obligations of what it means to be in FBLA. Officers were then called up to accept the roles and responsibilities put upon them for the upcoming school year. Mrs. Palkaunieks has taken the reins once again as the MWHS FBLA Chapter Advisor. 🎉💜

Free Meals for all students during the 2025-2026 school year!
All students enrolled at Monroe-Woodbury Central School District are eligible to receive a healthy breakfast and lunch in school at no charge to your household each day of the 2025-2026 school year.
All students will be able to participate in these meal programs on the first day of school without having to pay a fee or submit an application. All schools provide a breakfast program for students upon entry into school and a lunch program for students in the cafeteria.
School meal programs offer breakfast and lunch meals that meet strict federal nutrition standards, aligned with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and are planned with student preferences in mind. If packing food from home, students can add to their home brought lunch at no cost by choosing at least three of the five items offered, (e.g., low fat milk, proteins, whole grains, vegetables, and fruits), one of which must be a vegetable or fruit. We invite students to show their support for their school food service program through participation.

The Distraction-Free Schools New York State law, which was passed as part of the 2026 state budget, aims to promote student mental health and student success by prohibiting student use of personal electronic devices from the time students arrive at school until dismissal. This law goes into effect at the start of the 2025-26 school year.
The law applies to students in grades UPK-12 and bans the use of smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, earbuds, wireless headphones, and other internet-enabled devices. School-issued devices are exempt and will continue to be an important instructional tool in the classroom.
At the Board of Education meeting on July 23, the Board approved the Students and Personal Electronic Devices Policy. This policy addresses how the law will be enforced in our schools, as well as exemptions and exceptions. Families may request an exemption under specific circumstances, such as for documented medical or disability reasons. If you believe your child qualifies for an exemption, please complete the online Exemption Request form. All requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the district's Exemption Review Committee. Submission of this form does not guarantee approval, but it is the first step in the review process.
For more information, visit our Distraction Free-Schools page.
