Grading

Band Classes are graded just as any other course. They also have homework like any other course. Mostly homework will consist of practicing at home in order to prepare for any upcoming Play Tests or Performances*. In order for a student to keep up and be successful in these areas, it is expected that students will practice for 100 minutes a week minimum. About once a month, Play Tests will be completed using the SmartMusic program on which students can access on their Chromebooks or on any home computer with an internet connection. Small written take home assignments may also be assigned.

Grading Breakdown:

60% of Final Grade:

· Monthly SmartMusic Play Tests

· Take Home Written Assignments

· Concert and Performance Attendance*

Performing is a vital part of being a musician. It is a chance for the student to show what they have learned, as well as an opportunity to expose others in the audience to some great music. Being present to play for each of their groups’ official performance is mandatory for every student, and unless there is extenuating circumstances for which an “excused absence” is granted, final grades will be lowered if a student is absent. All students are also expected to be in appropriate dress during all concerts. Performers will be notified ahead of time about the performance dress for each performance as it approaches.*

*The status of Performances and Concerts this year is still not confirmed as Covid restrictions are still changing.

40% of Final Grade:

· Demonstrating Proper Rehearsal Etiquette

Proper “Rehearsal Etiquette” is an important part of every successful musician. The following are the criteria that make up proper rehearsal etiquette:

  1. Arriving at Rehearsal on time

  2. Coming prepared to Rehearsal with all the proper equipment needed (Instrument, Folder w/Music and Book, Pencil, any other needed equipment)

  3. During Rehearsal, paying attention to the conductor, following directions given, and not inhibiting others from doing the same.
