A little background...in 2017, the Washington legislature created the Paraeducator Board and tasked members to establish, develop and implement paraeducator minimum employment standards and the certificate program. The certificate program offers statewide standards-based training for all paraeducators and supports a career growth ladder for those who wish to pursue a teaching profession.
All Current paraeducators (hired before September 1, 2019) must have completed the 28 hour Fundamental Course of Study (FCS) training program by September 1, 2021. Bus Monitors are encouraged to participate, however, it is not required for this group.
Paraeducators employed new for the 2020-2021 school year must complete 14 hours of the Fundamental Course of Study by September 1, 2021 and be fully trained (28 hours) on the Fundamental Course of Study by September 1, 2022.
Paraeducators employed new for the 2021-2022 school year must complete 14 hours of the Fundamental Course of Study by September 1, 2022 and be fully trained (28 hours) on the Fundamental Course of Study by September 1, 2023.
Paraeducators employed new for the 2022-2023 school year must complete the full 28-hour Fundamental Course of Study program by September 1, 2023 per ESSB 5693 as approved by the Legislature in their 2022 session.
The Fundamental Course of Study (FCS) is the core training developed to assist paraeducators working with students and their families. Seven (7) hours of the FCS must be taught in-person; the remaining training hours may be provided online.
The district partnered with NWESD 189 who developed the Fundamental Course of Study (FCS) courses, Units 1-12, through the online Canvas training platform. The Human Resources Office will register you for an account in NWESD/Canvas -- you will receive an email invitation to finalize your account and begin training.
The window for the FCS training modules during the 2022-2023 school year will open in August 2022 through June 30, 2023 -- paraeducators must complete the courses by June 30th to assure uninterrupted employment for the 2023-2024 school year. Paraeducators may complete the training modules during their contracted/paid time, if possible, additional pay is available (up to 28 hours) if you are unable to complete the training during your regular work day.
