AFJROTC HEALTH AND WELLNESS PROGRAM
5.1. General Health and Wellness. Although AFJROTC does not have cadet weight or physical fitness standards; we encourage cadets to establish their own physical fitness training program. For cadets enrolling in a college ROTC program, service academy, or for those enlisting in a military service, they will have to attain and maintain minimum weight and physical fitness standards. If you start a program now and stay physically active, you will reap the benefits of a physically fit body throughout your adulthood. If you are physically fit, you will perform better in school and in all of your activities. For your guidance and information, the Air Force Height and Weight Standards are listed in Figure
5.2. AFJROTC Health and Wellness Program. Health and Wellness is a required part of the AFJROTC curriculum. The formal name of this part of the AFJROTC program is called the AFJROTC Health and Wellness Program. The purpose of the Health and Wellness Program is to get cadets active and to encourage them to develop an active lifestyle in order to improve their overall wellness. Again, the Health and Wellness Program is required to be 20% of the AFJROTC curriculum or in other words, usually about one day a week. As a normal course of action, the Health and Wellness Program will be conducted on Wednesdays. Prior to beginning the Health and Wellness Program all cadets are REQUIRED to have their parent/guardian sign the Health and Wellness Program participation consent form. All cadets are expected to be prepared (dressed for athletic activity in their prescribed Health and Wellness uniform) and to participate to the best of their abilities. The key factor is effort. The Health and Wellness Program is based on individual effort and improvement. The Health and Wellness Program consists of 5 exercises and a 1-mile run. The very first time cadets perform the exercises and the run establishes a baseline, or beginning, performance from which to measure personal improvement. At the end of the year, after performing the exercises and running on a regular basis, the cadets will be measured again to determine their individual improvement. AFJROTC is developing award criteria for participation in the Health and Wellness Program and for attaining top fitness levels and for personal improvements. Again, the Health and Wellness Program is NOT optional; it is a required part of the AFJROTC program. Any additional physical fitness programs are optional and may be established by the Cadet Corps Commander depending on the desires and participation of the Cadet Corps.
5.3. Participation in Health and Wellness. All cadets are expected to participate in the Health and Wellness Program to the best of their ability. If cadets cannot participate due to valid medical reasons, cadets need to provide written documentation, preferably from a medical professional, requesting they be excused from physical activity. This written exemption will be provided to the school nurse and the AFJROTC instructors. Cadets will not be excused from participating in the Health and Wellness Program without proper written documentation and will receive a reduced grade for that day.
5.4. Additional Fitness Programs. The Cadet Corps Commander along with AFJROTC instructors may publish an operating instruction that outlines additional optional physical training programs for cadets.
5.5. Fitness Permissions. Prior to starting any AFJROTC sponsored optional physical training program, cadets must obtain parent/guardian permission that allows them to participate in a physical fitness program. Depending on the program, a physician’s medical certification may be required. A physical fitness program can include numerous activities and a personal fitness regimen that should have obtainable objectives. If used, the Cadet Director of Physical Fitness will develop a safety plan, tracking system, publicize the efforts of cadets, and establish awards given to cadets who reach their objectives.
