When I thought of starting my own clothing line – I had no idea what I was getting myself into. The motto I’ve created in my mind before I make each item is “come up with a gotta-have-it item.” When I say this motto though, I’m applying it to what I like. A website I found called “How to Start Your Own Clothing Label” has six simple steps that they advise you follow. 1. Develop the design 2. Make a prototype 3. Source your materials 5. Find a factory 6. Fund your business 7. Sell, sell, sell. These steps don’t directly apply to me because I’m not going through a factory or even selling my items for that matter.

The focus of my project is ultimately to see what I can do with a sewing machine. So far, I’ve been pretty successful with that after doing research. Something that inspired me to do this project is the interest in sewing that my mom, aunt and cousin carried. An article I found called “Everyone Should Learn To Sew” discussed reasons why it’s such an important skill to have. “Sewing has so many layers. Sewing by hand, home decor sewing, sewing for children/grandchildren, fashion/garment sewing, quilting, crafts, upcycling, and a lot of other sewing areas I can’t even begin to recall. All that to say, sewing is a useful skill that is worth learning.”

Sewing is not necessarily easy which I have definitely learned since I started. In the past I’ve known the basics, but definitely not all the things I have learned so far. I didn’t know how to do a zig-zag stitch or a fold over stitch.
