journal

this page of the website is going to be dedicated to the journal I will be keeping throughout the project.

Below are some of my current ideas

To the right are the fabrics I ordered. They are all a specific, comfortable material called rayon lycra. Since the idea is to be comfortable, this fabric is perfect. I ordered 1.5 yards of each one.

The fabrics have arrived and I love them. Trish and I are going to start talking about pieces to make and how much fabric should be used.

2/13/17 - today was a big day!! I made my first ever piece of clothing. The top I made was a complete test, but it went really well.

This is where I've been working. Trish's studio called "Frock".

This is the shirt on pattern paper which is how you initially make any product you're making. Interesting fact I learned: the spacing on pattern paper is exactly 1 inch between each other so it's a million times easier to measure/cut.

So far (3/9/17) I've made about five things. I never thought I'd learn as much as I have with these five pieces. There is so much that goes into clothing that the average person doesn't think about.

Something interesting I learned is truly how much fabric goes into a piece. Yesterday (3/9/17) I made a long sleeve shirt with a pocket and two arm side details. The shirt took 1.5 yards to make.

(3/15/17) Today I made a 3/4 sleeve shirt. It was the first time that I was genuinely confused so far in this project, which is probably good for me. I was making a cuff on the sleeve (harder than it sounds). I ended up making it tighter than I wanted so I had to cut it and re-think the entire shirt. That is the hardest part of the project thus far. The amount of time one shirt takes, too is shocking. I ended up leaving the shirt to finish at another time.

3/13/17 I ordered more fabric today which is super exciting. This time, I got a material called "french terry". This fabric is basically "sweater material". I am planning on making chunky sweaters because I love the style of those.

3/17/17 Today was St. Patrick's Day so I made shirts for my friend and I. The fabric I used was jersey knit and I learned how to put elastic in a shirt. The style I chose was inspired by other shirts that I own. It was interesting the way you put elastic in. You have to leave a spot open before you finish the hem and then threat it through with the elastic and safety pin.

3/29/17 Today I made my first color block shirt! I got new fabrics (sweater material - which is called french terry) I got various different colors and planned to make chunky sweaters. I didn't follow exactly what my idea was, but a vision came to me about a sweater and we decided to make it. Earlier today, I made a sketch of the vision (I am NOT a good artist or a good sketcher, but I will put the picture and final product below) It was weird/interesting piecing two different materials together and making it look good.

4/4/17 Today I made an off the shoulder dress. It was basically the same pattern as the off-the-shoulders shirt, but long and more shaped to my body. I used the same process of using the elastic and threading it.

4/6/17 Today I made my first turtle neck, which was so fun. It was super confusing at first, but then after a while I got the hang of it. The fabric I used was french terry, but for the sleeves I decided to use the inverse fabric (which was VERY CONFUSING). I decided to use green thread for the sleeves so it would give the turtle neck a splash of color.

4/12/17 My new fabrics came in today and I started making a skirt. I learned a lot about corduroy because that's what I'm making the skirt out of.

Ordering fabrics this time around was really fun because I knew exactly what I wanted to make which each fabric.
