The course introduces students to American Sign Language as a visual/gestural language rather than a spoken language. This course is for students who ONLY want to fulfill the 2 year Foreign Language requirement for graduation and do NOT plan on taking ASL III or IV. This course will provide an introduction to American Sign Language emphasizing basic language development through vocabulary study, conversational practice and cultural studies. Some grammar and writing practices will be introduced.

This course is for students who ONLY want to fulfill the 2-year Foreign Language requirement for graduation and do NOT plan on taking ASL III or ASL IV. In this course students will move beyond fundamental skills and be introduced to a higher level of ASL vocabulary and grammar. Students will strengthen skills in both the receptive and expressive areas. Signed exchanges will move beyond basic information and into description, narration and self-expression. Students will broaden their knowledge of Deaf culture and current issues among the Deaf community. Students will be expected to use ASL and greatly limit the use of voice.

ASL III Honors

Prerequisite: ASL II with 90+ average
Students will develop their proficiency in both receptive and expressive skills. Besides using ASL in a social and survival situations, students will use the language to express their feelings about a given topic and will encourage others to adopt a course of action concerning current events. In addition, students will further their knowledge and understanding of the Deaf culture through study of ASL poetry and famous Deaf people both past and present. Students will be expected to use ASL and limited use of voice.

This course offers students opportunities to expand and refine their ASL expressive and receptive skill. Students will continue to learn more of the Deaf Community, Deaf Culture and Deaf History as well as the norms and values of the Deaf Community. Limited use of voice.

Spanish II continues the process of foreign language mastery. Application of basic language skills mastered in Spanish I and an increasing emphasis on reading and writing skills are the focus of this course in conjunction with continued vocabulary study, grammar lessons, conversational practice, and cultural studies. Students will be expected to memorize dialogues, write and present oral presentations and short speeches, and to understand oral instruction given in the target language.

Spanish II continues basic language skills mastered in Spanish I Honors with an increasing emphasis on reading & writing skills, continued vocabulary study, grammar lessons, conversational practice, and cultural studies. Students will memorize dialogues, write and present oral presentations and short speeches. Most of this fast paced course will be conducted in Spanish and students will also be expected to use Spanish in class as much as possible.

Spanish III Honors continues the process of foreign language mastery. Application of the basic language skills from Spanish I and Spanish II, along with enhanced language development, is the main goal. Cultural aspects, through literature, history, music and art, will be explored in greater depth with increased emphasis on reading and writing. Students will be expected to read legends, short stories, poetry, and a novel. Additionally, students will be asked to role-play realistic situations and to write and perform short skits.

Spanish IV AP

Prerequisite: Spanish III Pre-AP
This course offers students opportunities to expand and refine their oral and listening comprehension skills. Use of literary works will incorporate reading comprehensions and writing skills. There is a more thorough study of the different countries and the people who speak Spanish. Material in the curriculum will prepare the students to take the Advanced Placement Exam in Language. Students who take this exam will receive three hours of college credit depending on the college and their test scores.
