Welcome to Nipmuc Regional High School's Innovative Conceptual Engineering Design Epic Challenge Program Website
Since 2012, Mr. Gorman has offered an applied engineering course called NASA Innovative Conceptual Engineering Design (ICED) Collaborative Class. Students employ the ICED methodology created by Dr. Charles Camarda, retired NASA Astronaut and Sr. Advisor for Engineering Development at NASA LaRC to solve 'Epic' Challenges. The program encourages ingenuity as well as creativity as students conduct research for solutions to real life issues while they design and build prototypes to be deployed as a solution to an Epic Challenge. This engineering class is designed to help fill the skills gaps needed in today’s workforce with the aim to encourage young people to study mathematics and natural sciences, and to work in the aerospace industry. The class has been so successful we have started an after-school club for students who could not be in the class but are interested. Students from both the after-school club and class have presented locally, nationally, and internationally.
Program Components:
Engineering I - a class where student learn about engineering as they work together to solve an Epic Challenge
Engineering II - a class where students can continue their project and mentor the 1st year students
After school club - a club for motivated students who want to work on the Epic Challenge but are not necessarily enrolled in an engineering class.
Middle School outreach - the past 2 Feb breaks we have run a Space Camp for middle school students and have had have run some engineering camps for middle school students.
