A mural by Henbo Henning & Mural Arts Advanced Program students
From May 2025 through June 2026, students in Mural Arts' Advanced Program collaborated with Henbo Henning, a British-born and NYC-based tattoo artist and illustrator, on a new mural project highlighting Fishtown's past and present as a vibrant community. In addition to co-owning his tattoo studio, Good Luck NYC, Henbo creates monsters and fantastical creatures, many based on folklore, across each of his artistic pursuits. It is through his folklore-centered approach to character design that Henbo and our students created No Place Like Home.
With input from the Fishtown Neighborhood Association, Henbo and the Advanced Program participants deigned new characters inspired by neighborhood history and culture, and included some familiar faces, too -- all rendered in Henbo's colorful, visually engaging style. The result is a jam-packed mural that pays tribute to Fishtown's recent recognition as a cultural hub, as well as its Indigenous roots, working-class immigrant history, and industrial influence.
The information compiled on this mural companion website was written by Advanced Program students Carnila Igusti-Ayu, Laurice Heard, and Marlen Flores Jimenez. Their research illuminates our program participants' design process, shares more information about the characters present in the mural, and provides some of Fishtown's historical context that helped to inform their artistic choices.
Whether you are a Fishtown resident or just passing through, we hope that No Place Like Home teaches you something new, inspires you to learn more about the neighborhood, or just makes you smile!
