This has been another very productive week, and has provided us with scenic views and beautiful weather!
We remained in Hawke Channel for the majority of the week, with a docking in Mary's Harbour, Labrador for the Captain's to change out!
This week we have had beautiful weather, which meant we were able to deploy all our gear at each station! We have collected some great data, and some wonderful imagery from our Baited Cam and Bouncy Cam. Being able to see first hand the biodiversity that exists at each site is truly wonderful, and allows us to directly see the outcomes of these conservation areas.
On July 15th, one of our deckhands had a strange sight when recovering our CTD after its deployment, a fish was caught in the grate! This was a surprise as the CTD is a collection of oceanographic sensors, testing water parameters at different depths, and definitely not intended to catch fish!
The species was identified as a White Barracudina, or Arctozenus rizzo. This was an interesting sight, and we are hoping to see its presence in our eDNA samples!
When asking our team the highlights of their trip so far, these are some of their answers: seeing a Greenland shark and Northern Wolffish on the baited cam; benthic biodiversity at station H6; getting the Multibeam up and running; watching Finding Dory; Jeff's chicken stir fry; and playing the game Cooked!
Here is our path of travel this week, and the stations we have sampled thus far! This map was created by two of the work-term students involved in this project, Kavindu Deraniyagala and Kasun Perera.
This week included dates from July 15th-20th, and a trip to Mary's Harbour to swap out the ships Captains!
