Before we can edit, we must import our audio to Audacity, we can do this in two different ways:
We can drag and drop the audio files from our desktop.
We can import the files from our computer.
Pro Tip 1: Most audios that you download will be stereo tracks, depending on the sound you are trying to achieve, this may be okay to keep (i.e. background music). If you do not want to keep the stereo track, you can hit Track > Mix > Mix Stereo Down to Mono.
Once you have imported an audio file, we must place it where it matches the your speaking mono track. To move the track, select the "Selection Tool" to drag the audio to your desired place. This is a tedious job, so after every move, ensure you listen to the newly imported track to see how it fits.
Pro Tip: Import your background music first and ensure that it is lined up with where you want your mono track to start. Then import your sound effects after.
For this project, you must also demonstrate that you know how to use different tools in Audacity. Please use at least 4 of the tools below to help you achieve a polished final healthy living commercial. You can use these tools on any audio included in your commercial.
Split Clip allows you to split one audio track in to two or more sections of audio. If you need a pause in your speaking track to include a sound effect, the Split Clip tool can help you achieve this pause. To use this tool, select the portion of the clip you would split, then right click and hit Split Clip.
In my example, I used Split Clip to make pauses in my speaking track for my sound effects.
Amplify is used to increase or decrease the volume of a selected track. It allows you to choose an amplitude to amplify the track to. To use the Amplify tool, select Effects > Amplify.
I used Amplify to increase the dB of my mono speaking track in my example.
Fading in in Audacity helps fade the audio in when you are starting your commercial or helps for a smooth entrance of your sound effect. To use Fade In, select the portion of the audio that you would like to fade in, then press Effect > Fade In.
In my example, I faded in my first sound effect to ensure a smooth entrance of it.
The Normalize Tool allows you to set the peak amplitude of one or multiple tracks. It can also balance the left and right stereo tracks and remove background noises, such as a click of a key. To use Normalize, select Effect > Normalize.
I used Normalize in my example to increase the dB of my chips sound effect.
Change Tempo allows you to speed up an audio track without changing the pitch. For this assignment, this tool is useful if you have a part at the end of your healthy living commercial that clarifies any terms or liabilities of what you have said.
In my example, I changed the tempo of my disclaimer at the end.
The Envelope Tool in Audacity allows you to control the different sections of a track's volume. For example, at the beginning of your commercial, if you have music that starts before you start speaking, you want that to be loud when you are not speaking, but quiet when you are speaking. The Envelope Tool helps you make this effect. To use this effect, select the Envelope Tool and the select from which two points of audio you wish to compress.
My example shows how you can use the Envelope Tool to alter the dB of a portion of your background music.
Fading out Audacity helps fade the music out when you done your commercial or helps for a smooth exit of your sound effect. To use Fade Out, select Effect > Fade Out.
My example uses Fade Out at the end of the commercial to ensure there is no abrupt end.
