8 things you may not know about MIN
On Feb 14th 2026, it’s 8 years since Mums In Need has had charitable status. In recognition, we’ve pulled together 8 things you may not know about us.
1. Where we started
The charity started with one single mum, Laura. Finding there was no support for her as she battled post-separation abuse, she founded the charity with a vision to provide safe, practical, and emotional support to other mums. You can read more about Laura’s story here.
2. Lived experience led
Mums In Need is a lived experience led charitable organisation. The input of survivors is important to us, so many (but not all) of those who work for us have experienced coercive control, domestic and post-separation abuse. That goes for the trustees, staff, Ambassadors, volunteers, and students, who all play a vital role in supporting our work and making a difference in the lives of women we serve. You can meet our team here.
3. Always evolving
Offering practical (e.g. legal, educational) as well emotional (e.g. 1-2-1s, wellbeing) support is at the core of what we do. However, we’re always looking at how we develop that support. One of our latest initiatives includes free downloadable resources, which you can find here. Of course, the more funding we receive, the more we can do to help.
4. Local, and national, impact
We’re a local charity, but we have big ambitions to become national. We see the lack of support for those facing post-separation abuse and work to raise awareness of the issues widely. Locally, we’re grateful for local businesses who support us financially, practically, and in raising awareness as well as funds. There’s more about corporate support possibilities here.
5. Creating change
Although it will never be quick enough for those struggling in the family court system, we have seen significant developments in the wider field of domestic abuse during our time as a charity. In 2019, the first Domestic Abuse Commissioner, Dame Nicole Jacobs, was appointed. You can read more about her role here. In 2023, post-separation abuse also became legally recognised in the UK as a form of controlling or coercive behaviour.
6. Write To Be Heard
In 2025, our Mins (mums we’re supporting) were invited to take part in therapeutic writing workshops with the Write To Be Heard project. They were then invited to submit their writing to be included in a book featuring voices of survivors, anonymously for their own protection. This book is now available to buy, with all profits coming directly to Mums In Need. Find out more, and buy your copy here.
7. Hundreds of people helped
In eight years, we have supported hundreds of women and children directly. In addition, we’ve created resources and awareness to help even more. In our last financial year alone, we’ve helped 109 women and 194 children. You can read more about what we’ve achieved in our Impact Report here.
8. We still need your support!
Mums In Need relies on the generosity of others. We’re grateful for the time, energy and money that has allowed us to support all those we have. However, we also see the immense need for our help. Our waiting list regularly has to be shut as we simply cannot support the number of women who come to us. There are many ways in which you can help, from donating and fundraising to volunteering. Raising awareness of Mums In Need and what we do is important too, so please follow us on social media, share our posts, and sign up to our newsletter. Find ways to help here.
