Student Preparation
A comprehensive process to prepare students for career transition is in place. Students are given co-curricular and extra-curricular opportunities that support career goals. Students are supported and recognized by staff.
The BCHS Public Safety Pathway provides meaningful work-based learning opportunities that connect classroom instruction to real-world experience. Beginning next year, students will have access to two competitive internships—one with the local Sheriff’s Office and one in partnership with Merced College—allowing them to gain hands-on exposure to law enforcement operations, postsecondary pathways, and professional mentorship. In addition, students participate in operational support experiences at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Laguna Seca Speedway, and Monterey Car Show, where they observe large-scale event safety coordination and multi-agency collaboration. These experiences develop leadership, professionalism, communication skills, and career readiness while helping students confidently explore futures in public safety.

At BCHS, students in the Public Safety Pathway are required to complete foundational emergency management certifications—including ICS 100, ICS 200, Hazardous Materials Awareness, and NIMS 700—prior to participating in the program’s Mass Casualty Incident and Multi-Agency Critical Incident simulations. These nationally recognized FEMA-aligned courses ensure students understand the Incident Command System, unified command structure, interagency coordination, and scene safety protocols before engaging in high-level scenario-based training. By requiring successful completion of these certifications, the program reinforces professionalism, accountability, and preparedness, ensuring students enter simulation experiences with the knowledge and discipline expected in real-world public safety operations.
At BCHS, the Public Safety Pathway fosters strong student leadership and career engagement through active participation in SkillsUSA and community-based public service opportunities. A significant number of enrolled students are affiliated with SkillsUSA. The BCHS chapter is a Chapter of Excellence Program, demonstrating a commitment to continuous growth, service, and professional development.
