How to Navigate the Project Gallery:
ATS Sustainment Garden
Arvon Township School, grades K-8 continue to improve the school garden. This is the third year that the garden has been planted. The garden this year will consist of raised boxes with, fruiting plants, pollinators flowers, and vegetables.
The project location is at the school for the garden and various beaches in the county that needed trash picked up. The problems students are solving are keeping the freshwater lakes clean and creating a sustainable garden that uses its own cycle to keep producing.
Project Pollinators
Our students are researching and creating informational pamphlets to hand out at our annual Open House. Topics include Monarch butterflies, pollinators and native plants. Students are also learning how to plant and how to sow seeds to grow their own healthy foods at home. Students are also learning how to continue to care for our school garden.
4th and 5th grade, Dollar Bay Elementary School
Seeds of Knowledge- Kids and Farmers Unite in the Keweenaw
This LSSI project served 3rd through 5th graders at Houghton Elelmentary School in the Houghton Portage School District. Students learned about local farming, art, and Anishinaabe culture and created their own art to reflect on their experience.
Farmers, a writer, and an artist worked with our students to help them develop a sense of place in our community. They learned where local food comes from, what it takes to grow it, and how to take care of the pollinators that help provide that food. They expressed their learning with two murals and a practical garden sculpture project. Our local watershed benefits from food being sourced locally by farmers who are taking care of it while taking advantage of the resources it provides.
Protecting the Night Sky
Calumet High School Art Classes, Grades 9-12
Calumet Art students learned about the importance of protecting the night sky and all of the benefits to animals, plants, and humans. Students each explored an aspect of this critical topic and created a 32 page zine to share with all. We printed some and we have the digital version available here in this LSSI Celebration.
🌟 8th Grade Copper Week Field Trip! 🌟
Mrs. Andress and Mrs. Lewandowski's 8th graders had an amazing hands-on learning experience as part of their stewardship initiative for Copper Week! 🏔️🔨 Students kicked off the day by cleaning up garbage at the historic Painesdale Mine & Shaft, giving back to the community while exploring local mining history. The adventure continued with Kevin Kyllonen and Matt Portfleet from Adventure Mining Company, who gave an eye-opening presentation on environmentally friendly copper processing. Students learned about their innovative method that uses classic laundry detergent and floor drains to recycle thousands of gallons of water! 🌱💧 As a special treat, each student received a beautiful copper nugget—a little piece of local history to take home! 🏅✨A big thank you to Adventure Mining Company, LSSI, and all who helped make this experience unforgettable! 💙

Chassell Biodiversity Project: Citizen Science and Ecosystem Stewardship
Chassell students continued to monitor the biodiversity in their school forest and the Pike River. They had some exciting finds this year! They also planted a native wildflower garden next to the school and are raising butterflies to release at this site at the end of the school year in the hope of increasing the biodiversity by the school.
Our Community's Very Important Biodiversity (the students chose this):
