Hongyu An

Director, Brain-Inspired AI Laboratory

Hongyu An is an assistant professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Michigan Technological University. He acquired his doctoral degree from Virginia Tech, master's degree from Missouri University of Science and Technology, and bachelor's degree from Shenyang University of Technology, all in electrical engineering. At Virginia Tech, He was in MICS group and mentored by Prof. Yang (Cindy) Yi studying neuromorphic systems, integrated circuits (ICs), and memristors. Hongyu An is the recipient of numerous awards, including Bill and LaRue Blackwell Dissertation Award, NSF CISE Research Initiation Initiative (CRII) Award, NSF Directorate for Engineering (ENG) Engineering Research Initiation (ERI) Award, United States Air Force Visiting Faculty Research Program (VFRP) Fellowship, and more.

Yan Zhang

Co-Director, Brain-Inspired AI Laboratory

Yan Zhang is a research assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Michigan Technological University. She received her bachelor’s in pharmacy from West China Medical Center at Sichuan University and a master’s degree in Pharmacology from Peking Union Medical College in China. She received a Ph.D. degree in Pharmacology and Toxicology from University of Missouri-Kansas City. She worked at the Jared Grantham Kidney Institute at Kansas University Medical Center as a postdoctoral researcher. She received the Postdoctoral Fellowship Award from the Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Foundation.

Graduate Students

Tianze Liu is a Ph.D. student in the ECE department at Michigan Tech under the supervision of Dr. Hongyu An. In December 2023, he received his MS degree in Computer Engineering from Northwestern University.

Research Interests: Neuromorphic Computing, Robotics, Embedded Systems, IoTs, Multi-agent systems

Ananna Biswas is a Ph.D. student in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Michigan Tech. Before joining this lab, she worked as a Research Engineer in the AimsLab, at United International University (UIU), Dhaka, Bangladesh. She started her research career as a Research assistant in an AI-based software company, Brainekt after completing her undergraduate studies. She received her B.Sc. degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET), Khulna, Bangladesh in 2019. Noah Zins is a graduate student in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and Michigan Tech. In May 2021, he received a BS in Computer Engineering with a minor in Mathematical Sciences from Michigan Tech. 

Research Interests: Neuromorphic Computing, Signal and Image Processing, Processor Architectures, Robotics, and Embedded Systems.

Md Abu Bakr Siddique is pursuing his graduate studies in the department of ECE at Michigan Tech under the supervision of Dr. Hongyu An. Before joining as a graduate student at MTU, he held a research assistant position at the University of Arkansas. He worked as a full-time faculty member at IUBAT, Bangladesh. Mr. Siddique received his B.Sc. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the Islamic University of Technology, Bangladesh. 

Research Interests: Machine learning, Deep learning, Artificial intelligence, Neural network systems, Neuromorphic computing, Biomedical imaging, VLSI, embedded system, etc.
