All 8th grade students are recommended by their science teacher into either Integrated Physical, Environmental and Life Sciences (IPELS) or HIPELS (Honors IPELS) for 9th grade based on the following factors:
Marking Period 1 & 2 science classroom grades (typically in the 90s)
A math diagnostic assessment (to be administered the Week of February 2 during science classes- no studying needed)
Student skills including:
Evidence of proficiency with independent inquiry
Regular classroom engagement in the Science and Engineering Practices
Work ethic
What if my student isn’t recommended for HIPELS but wants to take the course?
Students who are not recommended by their teacher but are interested in being considered for HIPELS can complete a Google Form waiver. This form will be posted in the science Google Classroom in the spring and reviewed by the MHS Science Supervisor, Mr. Sullivan. Additionally, any alternative course sequences must also be approved by the MHS department supervisor, Jason Sullivan.
For more information about these courses, please visit the 2026-2027 MHS Program of Studies.
