MHS Summer School Math Information
(Pre-requisites for enrollment are below these FAQ)
**NOTE: Only students who will be In Grade 9 In the fall are eligible for SOAR credit courses
All MHS summer math classes which are being taken for credit are taught at the College Prep Level. (Not Honors). Supplemental study each night is required for students who are eligible to take the honors proficiency exam at the end of the course (details below).
A student will be awarded five (5) MHS credits on their transcript at the completion of the course. It will read on the transcript as “Summer School – (Course name) P”. P for passing or F for failing are how summer grades are listed on MHS Official Transcripts. Summer courses are not factored into the student’s MHS GPA
The numeric grade earned in the course is recorded by the teacher and used by counselors for placement into a non-honors course after the summer course is completed. If a student is interested in being placed into an honors level course, see the below course pre-requisites.
For students who are eligible to sit for the honors proficiency exam (again, see the requirements below): on Day 1 of the summer class, indicate to the teacher that you will need the supplemental materials to prep for Honors. They will add you to the list of students sitting for the exam. You could be removed from this list If you fail to achieve the required grade In that SOAR class.
A score of 85 on the Honors Proficiency Test must be achieved to advance to honors at the next level
Note: Should you fail to score an 85 on the proficiency exam to remain In the honors track, you can speak to your high school counselor as you have two options: 1- progressing to the CP level of your next class or repeating the class you just took in the summer in the honors level. Should you choose the second option, the summer class will NOT be placed on your transcript.
The honors proficiency exams will take place on the final day of the SOAR class (July 28th). Eligible students will complete their SOAR course final exam, have a break and then complete the honors proficiency exam.
