4th Grade Science Units
- Unit 1A: Understanding Systems
- After learning about what a system is, students worked in their science groups to pick a system that they would like to learn more about. In their research they we were required to be able to explain its individual parts, the function of each part, how the parts worked together and what would happen if a part was taken away.
- 1B Waves and Energy
- Through a variety of investigations students learned to discover:
- Where does energy come from?
- How is energy used?
- How is energy transferred?
- What are sources of energy, both renewable and nonrenewable?

Circuits
After learning about a circuit and how energy travels, students worked to answer the question, "Why do you need a battery in a flashlight?"
Rube Goldberg Machines!
After learning about energy throughout the unit, students put their new knowledge to the test to make Rube Goldberg Machines! Working in their science teams, students created their own machines that met specific requirements, including change of height, speed and direction. Other groups even managed to make a bell ring!
- Current Unit 2: Animal Structure & Function
Students are exploring how muscles and bones work to move their bodies, how their eyes work, and how finally how the brain controls their bodies!
