Math Counts

MathCounts is a national math enrichment, coaching and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement in every US state and territory. MathCounts is one of the most successful education partnerships involving volunteers, educators, industry sponsors and students. MathCounts is open to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders who enjoy math and like to solve math problems and puzzles and meet other students with this common interest. If you decide you want to try out for the competition, you should plan to attend the meetings on a regular basis. For meeting and competition dates, please check this site regularly.

Although MathCounts is the major competition that we look forward to every year, our team also competes in Math Olympiads and the AMC 8 and 10.

5th Grade Math Activity Club

The Grade 5 Math Activity Club is a club held at LMS on select Tuesday's where a group of 15 students will work together to complete a fun and engaging math activity. In this club, students will collaborate with their peers and utilize specific concepts learned in their math classes. This club is meant to be a fun time to get together with peers and use math in the real world together!

For reference, we will complete 4 different activities. Here are 2 of them for example:

1. Create a paper airplane, fly them, measure their distances, and analyze the structure vs flight distance.

2. Play the hula hoop game with 3, 4, 5,...and then all 15 students, in which they develop a pattern to predict how long it would take the entire population of Montgomery to complete the game.
