Dear Montgomery Community,
Our goal for middle school math placement is for students to achieve at the highest levels of performance with success and confidence. All math courses are aligned to the New Jersey Student Learning Standards to ensure students are college and career ready.
LMS and UMS continue the use of a Formula Score for determining math placement. The Formula Score is calculated as follows:
*Students in Math 6 Integrated who do not meet Formula Score but earn a 5/“Exceeding Expectations” on the Grade 6 NJSLA will be invited to take an Algebra Readiness Exam before September to determine if placement into Algebra I-7 is appropriate.
**Students in Math 7 who meet either criteria described below will be invited to take an Algebra Readiness Exam before September to determine if placement into Algebra I-8 is appropriate:
Students with a Formula Score of 90 or higher (no waiver) and a Spring STAR score in the “Exceeding” range
Students who do not meet Formula Score but earn a 5/“Exceeding Expectations” on the Grade 7 NJSLA
By June, you will be able to view the recommended math placement for next year in Parent Resources.
Waiver Process [For Eligible Students in Math 5, Math 6, & Math 6 Integrated]:
If a student's Formula Score is within 3 points of 90, teachers will reach out to parents by email with an option to waive their child into the accelerated class. Please know that students who waive into an accelerated class may require extra time practicing and working with the math content next year.
We continue to commend our math teachers on their superior efforts in standards aligned differentiated instruction, data collection, and communication. Please respect all of their work in these areas as it is important to us to have academic placements be the most successful.
