Course Options

Dear Montgomery Community,

Grade 5-8 teachers have worked hard to assure that our math courses are standards aligned and have a fluid progression from year to year. You will notice the update to course titles above that reflect this standards’ alignment work.

We will continue the use of the three categories and their percentage weights in computing proficiency for next year’s placement.  The breakdown is as follows:

25% Standardized grade level assessment (administered in May), 35% Course Cumulative Assessment (administered by the end of the year), and 40% Course Unit Assessment Average (administered when each unit is completed).

By June, you will be able to view the placement (Teacher Recommendation) for math for next year in Parent Resources.

Students in Math 5 move to Math 6, unless their Formula score is 90%+, they are then placed in Math 6 Integrated.

Students in Math 6 move to Math 7, unless their Formula score is 90%+, they are then placed in Math 7 Integrated.

Students in Math 6 Integrated move to Math 7 Integrated, unless their Formula score is 90%+, they are then placed in Algebra 1.

We are again utilizing the waiver process.  If a student is within 3 points of the 90, their teacher will reach out to you with an email with the option to waive into the other class.  Please know that our assessments are standards based and so accepting a waiver does mean that students may need extra time practicing and working with the math content next year.

We continue to commend our math teachers on their superior efforts in standards aligned differentiated instruction, data collection, and communication.  Please respect all of their work in these areas as it is important to us to have academic placements be the most successful.
