The student profile generated by the CogAT will provide insight into each child's unique strengths and areas of academic focus. The primary purpose of the CogAT assessment is to ensure the instructional programs offered by MTSD meet the individual needs of the students. Following the unique academic school years, this data profile will help teacher(s) meet your child's educational needs. Additionally, we will be using the CogAT data as one of the multiple data points necessary to comply with the Strengthening Gifted and Talented Act 2020, ensuring that all of our students receive the academic program that meets their academic and social-emotional developmental needs.
The Appeal Process:
All students have talents and gifts. Throughout the MTSD school system, students have the opportunity to participate in a vast array of both curricular and co-curricular activities. Our goal as a school district is to help all students reach their full potential. As a school district, we identify students who are eligible for gifted services as described by the criteria above.
The Strengthening Gifted and Talented Act defined the criteria as "students who possess or demonstrate a high level of ability in one or more content areas when compared to their chronological peers in the school district and who require modifications to their educational program if they are to achieve in accordance with their capabilities.” To that end, we have identified multiple data points to determine the entrance criteria to the Voyagers/Expeditions program.
If your student does not receive an invitation to participate in the Voyagers/Expedition Program, you may submit an appeal to be considered. Parent/Caregiver appeals must be completed within 14 days of the program start date. (Appeal Forms for grades 2-8 should be submitted between September 18 and October 3, 2025.)
As a parent/caregiver, you may appeal the decision of the school district when:
Your child has a cumulative CogAT score of 9.
You must provide a detailed rationale for reconsideration.
Any additional documentation that you believe will inform the process (optional).
At the end of the appeal window, your child will be invited to participate in an open-ended, creative task that will be reviewed by a committee. Families will be notified of the committee's decision.
