The Holiday Ensemble is an optional choir where students can learn extra music and perform at various events in December. Performance opportunities may vary from year to year, but are typically evening or weekend events. Students must be able to attend after school rehearsals as well as attending the performances.
Each year the Homestead Fine Arts Department does a Winter musical. Students can choose to be in the "choir" (actually called "ensemble" in the musical world) or to audition for lead/supporting roles where they have to sing in small groups or solo as they portray a particular character. Rehearsals are after school and the shows are in February. The musical is a big commitment, but also a lot of fun and very rewarding!
Solo & Ensemble Festival is an event through the Wisconsin School Music Association where students can perform a solo or ensemble piece (e.g. duet, trio, show choir, etc.) for a judge. Each student receives the judge’s evaluation sheet and if interested, a rating. All students are encouraged to participate in this event. Singing in front of a judge is an excellent opportunity to develop musicianship, singing ability, and even preparing for a job interview. It also is beneficial to participate for students who plan on applying for honors groups or attending college where they can list participating in this event.
There are various opportunities to sing outside of events hosted through Homestead. These include community choirs (e.g. Ozaukee County Chorus), community musicals, honors choirs (e.g. WSMA State Honors Choir) and many more. Some of these groups are open to people of all levels of experience whereas others are very competitive and difficult to get into. All provide wonderful opportunities for people who love to sing!
Homestead Choirs are a part of The Florentine Opera’s Community Circle where we enjoy discounted tickets to attend their productions. We aim to take annual field trips to support their high level performances and expose students to the world's best operas!
