Objective:
This unit is designed to help the film student break down a specific scene of a film and analyze how a director can use cinematic techniques can create a specific response in an audience.

- "The Ten Steps"
- "Freakshow"
- Night of the Living Dead (1968) dir. George A. Romero
- The Shining (1980) dir. Stanley Kubrick
- A Quiet Place (2018) dir. John Krasinski
Activities:
- Record film terminology related to editing
- Observe and record examples of horror film techniques from a selection of short films, Night of the Living Dead and The Shining
- Analyze each technique to determine how the director creates it
- Prepare a presentation on three different techniques OR
- Demonstrate understanding of three techniques by creating a short film utilizing at least three techniques
Evaluation:
Students will be evaluated based on the ability to analyze and explain how directors use camera movement, composition (mise en scene) and/or editing techniques to create a specific response in an audience.
