Thanks to Anya MacMillan and Muriel Shippee for their warm welcome and tour!!
Talia's work with 3rd graders focuses on the one-room school houses that used to educate the children of Colrain. After using resources from the Library of Congress and local archives to learn more about the history of their community, students will build models of the school houses as part of a model town being constructed in the elementary school library. Tom's work with 8th graders focuses on the use of dams for industry and the impact of those dams on the ecology of the region. They started their work this spring just in time for the 150th anniversary of the Mill River Flood of 1874. Students will continue their work with local waterways next year. Image link
Drue's work with 7th grade science classes will involve the study of our local waterways, like the Deerfield and Connecticut Rivers, through the lens of the changes that have taken place due to natural disasters like floods. Students will use local primary sources like maps and survey data in their research. Image link
The 11th grade history and ELA teachers, Erik, Julia, and Catherine, will work with students reading the book North Woods, by Daniel Mason, to tell their own place-based stories, using primary documents from local history. They'll research their chosen places throughout history in local archives and library collections and create children's books to share their stories.
Stacie and Catherine will work with Marine Science and US History students on a series of lessons exploring the human relationship with whales in New England, from indigenous cultures to the present. Students started work this spring with a whale watch and field trip to UMASS-Amherst to see relevant art and science exhibits. Image link
