Treaty 7 Territory
In the Treaty Law Schools of 2015 and 2018, the elders late Noel Starblanket of Starblanket Cree Nation and late Vern Bellegarde of Little Black Bear First Nation, attended to speak on their history with early Indian political development in their Saskatchewan and Treaty Four territory. There is a critical gap for this history. Late Noel Starblanket and late Vern Bellegarde were elders that supported and guided the Treaty Law School and their legacy now is the Leadership Archives.
Beginning in 2025, the Mount Royal Media Department will support a gathering of interviews with Treaty Indian Leadership so that their stories and historic accounts may be shared and preserved for the next generations.

Our history of governance must have a place in our education today. In a Treaty Law School, we are creating space for our inherent governance frameworks as our Ancestors stipulated. In a school of Indian Treaty Law thought, the focus is on governance frameworks as our Ancestors stipulated before and at the time of Treaty. Today, we seek this alignment with our inherent principles of nationhood and sovereignty.

What is clear is that Indian people today maintain recognition of protocols and beliefs that guide their lives. These are still Laws. What is also maintained is that what is spiritual may also not appropriately be written or documented and so these may be dismissed in a Western lens or context but as long as there is an observance of this knowledge in Indian people’s lives and ways of life then they are alive and meaningful in this practice.
