Short Bio
Paul Varella started his career working in the agribusiness sector in Brazil, after graduating with a B.Sc. (Agriculture) from the University of São Paulo.
After 11 years working in farming and chemical fertilizer industries, he moved to Calgary with his family, where he completed his MBA (Finance) and PhD (Business Strategy and Organizational Studies) at the University of Calgary.
He joined MRU in 2006 and has developed his academic career at the Bissett School of Business. He occupied the position of Assistant Chair and then Chair of the Department of Management and Human Resources (2010/11 to 2012/13) and Associate Dean (2013/14 to 2016/17).
He is also an Adjunct (Visiting) Professor with the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development at the Utrecht University, Netherlands. He supervises graduate students and participates in joint research initiatives with that institute.
He has taught at Arizona State University, University of Calgary and Mount Royal University. His teachings include courses in the areas of Business Strategy, Governance & Ethics, Leadership, Management and Organizational Behaviour, among others.
He has presented his research in numerous conferences around the world. He also published in leading journals in the field, including The Leadership Quarterly, Organizational Science, and the Journal of Business Ethics.
He is a past conference chair, president and member of the Administrative Sciences Association of Canada. He is also a member of the Academy of Management.
