High Frequency words: Regular and irregular words that appear often in printed text
Regular words: Can be decoded by sounding out
Irregular words: Parts of these words cannot be decoded by sounding out and must be learned "by heart." View the animation for a few words at Heart Word Magic.
Introduce 2 irregular words each tutoring day, especially ones necessary for the book the student is reading that day.
Map the heart words with hearts on the parts that are not decodable
Write high frequency words on individual cards and review them regularly with games like:
In this memory game, the child has to match (and read) sight word pairs from a number of faced down cards.
Is just like it sounds. The child uses a "fishing rod" to catch a fish. Once a fish is caught, the child flips over the fish to read the word at the back.
This game is played like traditional bingo with the exception that sight words are used on the bingo card.
Introduce the most frequent words first (see list: Honig et al., 2018, p. 244-245)
Introduce words that include the phonics skill you are teaching that day: High Frequency Words by Phonics Skill and Dolch Sight Word List Sorted by Skill
