REAL Lab

• REAL (Real Experience and Learning) laboratory instructional pedagogy which aims to provide students with an experience that closely matches actual scientific process.
• There is a focus on data quality because it is only through good data that scientific progress can be made.
• In order to do this, students must be able to repeat experiments not only to acquire enough "N's" (replicates) but equally important, to develop proper skills and techniques that make those N's have value.
• This pedagogy has been developed and continually refined by myself and others at MRU.
• Examining how REAL Lab could alter student views on laboratory instruction is the subject of my successful application for entry into the 2016 Nexen Teaching and Learning Scholar Program.

Currently, REAL Lab is being implemented in:

• BCEM 3202 - Enzymes and Metabolic Systems
