At the heart of the Blackfoot Odyssey is storytelling via the Indigenous oral tradition. These stories encompass a Blackfoot (Kainai) perspective and worldview. They are the real-life experiences of Iitsooahp’potah (Battles in Water), Joe Eagle Tail Feathers.
At the request of Mistaki Oomaka (Mountain Runner), Dr. Christopher Grignard, Joe agreed to be featured in a series of videos created for the curriculum of one of Christopher's Indigenous Literatures courses at Mount Royal University. In terms of video content, Joe was asked to share his insight on what ceremony is, who and what is involved, what role the land plays in it, and why it all matters.
Joe's own personal experiences and encounters that he shares in the videos are as vast and distinct as the six sacred sites of which he speaks. Joe visited these locations over a period of nearly 20 years several times for the purpose of ii tatsi ii soop', what is referred to as vision quests. It was at these places where Joe was taught through vision traditional protocol to perform ceremony.
