The registrar is the office you interact with to register for classes, transfer in credits, and declare majors and minors. Many springies transfer in credits to make up for their lost semester, whether these be APs, dual enrollment, or other college classes. This webpage is intended to give you a crash course on how to find information and interact with the registrar.
Number of Transferrable Credits
As a student you can transfer in up to 64 credits. 32 of these credits can be advanced placement for scores of 4 or 5. 16, for springies only, can be gained and transferred in while a matriculated student. In other words, you can transfer up to 64 credits from classes you took before starting at MHC but you can only transfer in 16 credits of classes you took while you were a student at MHC. To put it another way, credits are counted not by when you actually transfer them in, but when you took the class you are transferring in. The classes you take in your Fall semester do NOT count towards your 16 classes while matriculated. For more information on which credits transfer, use this link Registrar Website for Transfer Credits.
How to Transfer Credits
Send transcripts or AP credits from the websites for those respective institutions to Mount Holyoke's address with the recipient being the registrar. Wait 1-2 weeks and watch your degree audit in my.mountholyoke (scroll to bottom, Self-Service Menu > Students > Academic Records > Degree Audit). If you do not see the credits appear, be ready to email the registrar with the syllabus for the class.
How Do I Know if This Class Will Transfer?
The best answer you can get to this question is to email the registrar AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE. The closer to the start of fall semester classes, the less likely you are to get a prompt response. If you cannot get an email from the registrar, your next best option is to look through the 5 College course catalog, https://www.fivecolleges.edu/courses, for a similar course. If you can find one that is very similar, you can make a good case to transfer the class.
Knowing Which Classes to Register For
Springies are often unsure of what classes they should take their first semester. It can be hard to weed through all the options and to know which classes will help you complete the requirements for your major(s), minor, 5 college certificates, or NEXUS or college requirements. As a firstie, it is good to pick classes that will help you pick or start your anticipated major and fulfill college requirements. Since all programs have different requirements, we recommend looking at the course catalog for majors, minors, and other degree options you might be interested in: http://catalog.mtholyoke.edu/areas-study/.
The distribution requirements at MHC are relatively simple:
I - Humanities (4 credits, 1 class)
II - Science and Math (4 credits, 1 class)
*Note: Only one Science OR Math is required, not one of each.
III - Social Sciences (4 credits, 1 class)
Other requirements the school has include:
First Year Seminar (4 credits, 1 class, they will enroll you in this)
Foreign Language (4 credits, 1 class)
Multicultural Perspectives (4 credits, 1 class, can be your humanity, social science, or math class)
2 semesters of Physical Education (4 PE credits, can be waived with disability accommodations under very specific circumstances)
128 credits, with 68 credits outside of the major (unless you have 2 majors)
To find classes for a particular semester, look in the course catalog : http://catalog.mtholyoke.edu/. This website is updated around the time of course registration every semester. If you click on the classes, you will see which college requirements they fulfill but not which major requirements they fill.
How to Register
The first step in course registration is finding the classes you want to register for. I recommend doing this as early as you can. Usually the course catalog for the following semester becomes available the Thursday or Friday before advising week. You can access that by going here: http://catalog.mtholyoke.edu/ and clicking "Search For Classes." To register, go to my.mountholyoke.edu. Scroll to the bottom of the page and at the bottom right you will find a section titled "Self-Service Menu." Click on the following drop downs: Students > Course Registration & Bill Payment > Registration. From there, click "Search/Register for Classes." Select the subject or subjects you would like to take classes in and press search.
When to Register
You MUST register at your registration time to get the classes you want. Classes are small and fill up very fast. To find your registration time, go to my.mountholyoke.edu. Scroll to the bottom of the page and at the bottom right you will find a section titled "Self-Service Menu." Click on the following drop downs: Students > Course Registration & Bill Payment > Approvals, Holds, and Registration Access Times. Under "Your Registration Access Period" you should find the date and time when you will be registering. It often does not come out until the week before registration.
