Creating the Cat Lamp was an exciting journey that pushed me to explore the intersection of creativity, technology, and problem-solving. Inspired by my earlier experience designing the Cat Lamp, I wanted to craft a lighting solution that was both functional and full of personality. The idea of a 2D wooden cat figure with LED eyes that respond to sound felt like the perfect blend of practicality and charm.
Throughout this project, I faced challenges that tested my cognitive flexibility and resilience. From adjusting the laser cutter settings to ensure precise cuts to refining the code that controlled the LED eyes, each obstacle required me to adapt and problem-solve. I relied on self-regulation to stay focused and a growth mindset to learn from every iteration. Feedback from Kris was invaluable—I actively listened to his insights and used them to refine the design, improve functionality, and ensure the final product met our shared vision.
This process wasn’t just about creating a practical solution for nighttime navigation; it became a lesson in collaboration and perseverance. The process of creating the Cat Lamp underscored the importance of persistence, adaptability, and collaboration, particularly when faced with unforeseen challenges. For instance, designing the wooden frame required precise measurements and adjustments to ensure compatibility with the CPX and cables. Initial iterations failed to achieve the desired balance between aesthetics and functionality, but through trial and error, I learned how to refine my approach. These challenges highlighted my cognitive flexibility, enabling me to pivot and experiment with new strategies, such as adjusting the laser cutter’s stroke settings to achieve a cleaner finish. Each setback became an opportunity to refine the design, making the final product more polished and functional.
During the coding process, by using the previous code structure with message box project, I quickly implemented features like color transitions triggered by touch, motion detection, and automatic shutoff after inactivity. This prior experience allowed me to move through the coding and testing stages efficiently, saving time and maintaining focus on perfecting the lamp’s functionality. What made this process particularly smooth was my familiarity with debugging and testing code. While minor adjustments were needed, such as fine-tuning the motion sensitivity and ensuring the lights turned off after exactly 10 seconds of inactivity, these issues were resolved quickly. For example, I was able to calibrate the sound threshold and refine the logic for light responses without significant delays. My previous exposure to programming taught me to anticipate potential bugs and approach them methodically, which minimized setbacks and allowed me to iterate quickly. This coding experience reinforced my confidence in problem-solving and technical execution. Seeing the lamp respond seamlessly to sound and motion felt incredibly rewarding, as it demonstrated the value of careful planning and technical knowledge.
The collaboration with Kris also proved invaluable when it came to mastering the technical aspects of laser cutting. From setting up different stroke layers for engraving and cutting to selecting the appropriate material thickness, his support helped me navigate challenges with confidence. By actively listening to his suggestions, I gained fresh insights into improving the Cat Lamp’s design and functionality. One of his most impactful recommendations was to create an “eye shadow” effect around the LED eyes, adding a subtle but artistic touch to the lamp. This suggestion went beyond my original idea of simply cutting a small hole for the cable, transforming the lamp into a more polished and visually appealing piece. Kris’s guidance not only improved the design but also gave me valuable insights into precision and creativity in laser cutting.
