Fimbel's Shopbot CNC (Computer Numeric Control) Machine is a computer controlled router with a 5'x10' bed. It is capable of cutting, carving, drilling and machining a variety of materials including, wood, plastic and foam. For more info on the Shopbot, check out this article on their site.
The Shopbot CNC is great for making multiple parts, large-scale prototypes, furniture, and signs. Below are a few examples of projects made on our Shopbot.
Using the Shopbot is a multistep process, beginning with a design file made in Illustrator or a CAD program and saved in a vector based format. The design file is then opened in a program called VCarve and the parameters for each cut are set. Once the file is complete it is sent to the Shopbot which is set up with the specific cutting tool needed for the project. The cutting process can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours, depending on the complexity and size of the design.
TRAINING
Training for the Shopbot is available, but due to the complexity of operating this machine ,Fimbel does not have a stamp for it and supervision by Pro Staff is always required. During your initial visit, you will learn about VCarve - the software used with the Shopbot - The Shopbot interface, startup/shutdown procedures, safety protocols, and file management. You will also try cutting or engraving some material.
If you have a project that you would like to do on the Shopbot, please make an appointment with Pro Staff on Pathways. Please note that academic projects are prioritized.
