Week2: 2/5 - 2/11

Goal For the Week:

    • Analyse the table and figure out what subjects can be most helpful for English learners to learn with the help of technology.
    • Design a curriculum that can implement different kinds of technology (ex. graphics, audio, feedbacks, VR) that can be used to overcome the shortcomings

I tried some other app called "Super Man", which is mainly targeted to Korean students wanting to learn English from listening to real conversations. How it works is, you can select your favorite celebrities or public figures. Then the app plays some major YouTube videos that the celebrities were in, and have a well-explained translation and allow you to "save" the phrases or idioms that are used in the video to your own dictionary. Also, whenever some important phrases, words, or idioms come up, then they would pause the video for a short time and have an explanation in Korean right below the video.

This is actually helpful for students who want to learn practical use of English especially for those who are already interested in American culture. Also, it's good that for every video, it has the hashtag of difficulty, the level of formality, and where it is taking place at. Depending on which celebrity you like and what kind of English conversation you would like to listen to, you can just click a video from a variety of shows. Again, it is really good for input (listening, reading) but lacks a form of "output". Also, it is slow to get updates about everyone you like. Barack Obama and Elon Musk, whom I subscribed to, only has about 10 videos in total. So if I finish them all, I will have to browse videos about others, while there are still tons of available videos on YouTube. It discourages active participation.

After observing and researching a few educational apps in a global scale, I have come to realisation: There were already too many apps right now in the market, especially in Asian countries particularly for English learning or Mathematics. So I tried to figure out what is already there but what is not there, and it could have taken a really long time for me to observe all the kinds that are available. It was too broad just to cover "educational technology for English Learners", and I don't know what features my app should have in order to be different from already existing platform, and what certain impact this app can bring to the world.

I need to come up an absolute objective of this project.

"What Do I Want To Achieve? To What Extent?"

Meeting with the Professor Audrey

: We discussed that the topic of edTech and designing a curriculum that will overcome all the shortcomings by supplementing the needs would be too broad for me to complete in one semester. The objective of this project, which I want to achieve, is to "use technology for better education".

She suggested me to work on a project that could possibly help professors/instructors to teach students CS more efficiently. There are already given curriculum and resources, so it would be better if I can work on something that can make an infrastructure where anyone can access and get prioritised resources based on their teaching environments.
