Positive Education at Mount Barker High School
What is Positive Education?
Based on the work of Professor Martin Seligman, Positive Education is the practical application in school of Positive Psychology, a branch of psychology that focusses on building a person's wellbeing to enable them to flourish in life.
By teaching simple, research proven life skills it is possible to build a person's
By building PERMA we provide what Professor Seligman refers to as an inoculation against poor mental health.
Mount Barker High School is committed to an ongoing investigation into how we can make our school a learning community that builds student achievement and wellbeing using positive psychology practices to develop PERMA in students, staff, families and the community.
Embedded into our teaching curriculum and practices are positive education principles to develop students' PERMA so that each student can develop the skills to flourish.
Our Positive Education program consists of the explicit teaching of concepts and skills that research has shown to improve resilience and wellbeing.
Why do we think it is important?
Studies from some programs demonstrate that teaching well-being and resilience:
promotes (realistic) optimism
builds character strengths, relationships and meaning
raises positive emotion and reduces negative emotion
prevents depression, anxiety and conduct problems

In some instances, we have developed site specific policies and procedures. Here you will find the policies and procedures relevant to your role as a TRT at our site.
Bullying and Harassment Policy
Expected behaviours of students and staff are listed in this policy. This policy is underpinned by the teaching and modelling of appropriate behaviours.
Straightforward, minor behaviour management (tier one) is to be handled using your own regular behaviour management strategies. See www.pbisworld.com for useful suggestions on managing specific types of behaviour.
Key points when handling of unacceptable and disrespectful student behaviour
Removal from class (tier two)
- Student to be sent to a buddy class
- Teacher who sent student to buddy class will record this through DayMap
- Include clear details for sending the student to buddy class in a staff note back to the subject teacher for follow up
If you receive a student into your class they are to sit separately at the allocated desk and work quietly
If you require support in your class for escalating behaviour, send a reliable student to Student Services to ask for assistance from a school leader
Mobile Phone to be taken out for all duties school number is 8391 1599

In the case of an accident where a student cannot be moved:

If Ambulance called, Administration Office staff need to be told so they can generate appropriate paperwork before Ambulance arrives

When you need to stop impersonating this teacher, click on the avatar at the top left of the page and 'remove impersonation'.
Select the lesson you have been given as a relief - select roll marking to mark the roll
Marking Roll - tick if present, U for unexplained absence or L for late (make sure you save entries)
Viewing roll class with photos - select the table labelled 'photos' to show student images against their name
