2025-2026 Message from Ms. Schumacher
I'm very excited about this year at Totem Middle School. Our band is going to be amazing this year. Not only do I love making music with our Phoenix musicians, but we're being combined with some very talented musicians from Marysville Middle School. We are going to be an amazing team. My expectations are high and I expect all of our Phoenix to RISE to the task.
6th grade band focuses on the fundamentals of playing an instrument and in an ensemble. One of the biggest hurdles of learning an instrument is the initial effort required. Encourage them to stick with it and practice a little every day even when it's challenging. In 7th grade band we begin to refine our ability to perform as a large ensemble. In 8th grade band, we step up the challenge as we play more challenging music and begin making more musical choices as we perform. Through hard work, we understand that being good at music is a lot of fun!

About Your Teacher
This is Ms. Schumacher's 4th year at Totem Middle School. She loves to go hiking and backpacking with her family and friends, go to the zoo, and listen to live music. She loves a diet coke on hot days and a hot chocolate on cold days. Do not feed her pickles or seafood unless it's sushi rolls or salmon. Teaching band and Spanish at Totem is definitely one of her most favorite things to do.
Ms. Schumacher plays trombone in the Seattle Women's Jazz Orchestra (SWOJO) and in the Formation Wind Ensemble. Both are Seattle-based all female performing groups. Be sure to check them out!
