CALL FOR ADMISSION TO THE BA-ELS PROGRAM
This degree program is an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the English language, especially its regional varieties. Compliant with CHED minimum requirements for such program, it combines theory and practice in the learning, teaching and use of English in various contexts in and outside the country with the aim of improving the quality of English communications in diverse situations, of increasing awareness of contextualized varieties of English, of contributing to knowledge generation on the historical, social, cultural and political dynamics of English use in post-colonial countries, such as the Philippines, and of contributing to the corpora of Asian Englishes, by capturing any emergence of regional or ASEAN English variety in literary works.
This program also integrates the following articulated CHED goals for BA ELS:
To provide a comprehensive knowledge of the English language – its origin, growth and development, structure and use.
To enhance the student’s competencies in the use of the English language in real-world contexts
To present appropriate strategies of language use through a heightened awareness of how English works in different situations in the Philippines and in Asia and the rest of the world.
Moreover, this degree program aims to produce not only articulate users and teachers of English, but also critical language researchers who can respond to language phenomenon that are crucial to nation-building. The BA ELS program widens the graduates’ job opportunities by preparing them to take on any language-related jobs in the fields of business, publishing, law, science, engineering, and even medicine. It can partner with government in translating regional literatures to English and vice-versa, complementing the MTB-MLE program in the Philippines.
