Dr. John Paul S. Tosoc is a Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Scientist in the Philippines. He is currently an Associate Professor, Internationalization Coordinator, and the Nutraceutical Laboratory Supervisor at the Science Department of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Mindanao State University-General Santos in General Santos City,Philippines. He was a former Research Fellow IV at the Institute of Human Genetics, National Institutes of Health, University of the Philippines Manila, Manila City, Philippines. He led the animal surgery and other in vivo experiments for the Acute Myocardial Infarction Disease Modeling of the Philippine-California Advanced Research Institutes Project at UP Manila, collaborating with the UP Diliman and the University of California Berkeley.
Dr. Tosoc obtained his Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Science in Biology degrees at Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology, Iligan City, Philippines. During his PhD program, he was a Visiting Research Scholar at the Pharmaceutical Research Institute, Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (ACPHS) in Rensselaer, New York, USA, where he did his dissertation and hands-on training in pharmaceutical science, nanomedicine, and cancer research. For the past seven years, he spent most of his research on determining and evaluating the pharmacological properties of various medicinal plants in the Philippines for possible drug discovery and development.
His advocacies include disseminating the importance of researching and pursuing a career in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, breaking the unrealistic stereotypes of scientists as geniuses, introverts, and silent. Moreover, aside from doing research, Dr. Tosoc has also been involved in science communication through social media platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram as a content creator. Through his content, he aims to show the real life of a scientist abroad and in the Philippines.
