Japanese Language & Culture 2 (JLC2)

STUDENT DEMOGRAPHICS:
Seniors who will be graduating at the end of the semester & Underclassmen
Asian Studies Certificate Program enrollees who completed JLC1 or tested in
Majority art majors
Learning challenges may be present
TIME REQUIRED:
1 unit = 2 weeks
BASIC ACTIVITIES:
at-home and in-class language activities, artistic assignment, ethnographic writing, and reflection
ASSESSMENT:
Artistic creations, illustrated action plans, vision boards and L1 reflections are added to the student's Language Portfolio
OUTCOME:
Students develop their language vision and action plans based on Japanese language proficiency and becoming a professional artist.
ADDITIONAL GOALS:
To encourage underclassmen to enroll in JLC3 despite their tight schedules
To motivate students not enrolled in JLC3 and graduating seniors to be autonomous learners and follow their action plan
Create a resources for classroom research on student trends.
Unit 1 Questioning: Answer “Who are you as a language user now and in the future?” (Baku the Nightmare Eater)
Unit 2 Discovering: Discover your strengths and interests (Shichifukujin the 7 gods of good fortune)
Unit 3 Thinking: Answer the question “Who am I?” (Manakineko the beckoning cat)
Unit 4 Sketching: Sketch a Possible Selves Tree using information from Lesson 2 (Singing & the 1000 year old tree)
Unit 5 Reflecting: Answer the question “What can I be?” (Daruma)
Unit 6 Growing: Answer “How do I get there?” (Kaizen - Continual Improvement)
Unit 7 Performing: Answer “How am I doing?” (Ikigai - the purposeful life)
