In 2024, The Iowa Food System Coalition launched Setting the Table for All Iowans, a ten-year statewide food systems plan organized around nine priority areas that bring partners together to set shared goals, strategies, and actions.
In this Learning Session, we explore how Iowa designed its collaborative planning structure, integrated evaluation from the start, and uses shared data to support cross-team collaboration, policy and advocacy efforts, and storytelling about Iowa’s food system.

In 2025, the National Congress of American Indians passed a resolution supporting the establishment of Tribal departments of agriculture as a way to bolster Tribal sovereignty through agriculture. Tribal departments of agriculture are poised to ensure Tribes have the authority and infrastructure needed to build and regulate their own agricultural economies, cultivating food sovereignty as part of Tribal sovereignty. In this interactive session we were joined by Nickole Keith of the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi and Will Derouin of the Grand Traverse Bay Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians to learn about their respective departments of agriculture and Tribal food sovereignty efforts.

In this connection session, we took a deep dive into our new guide, Developing Food Systems Plans: Considerations for Getting Started. This guide compiles collective wisdom to help community groups and coalitions lead their food systems planning processes. We hope to dig into these ideas and exchange examples and insights with participants from across the country!
Please note: we had technical difficulties with our recording, so our team is working on a summary 1-pager to share with those who could not attend. In the meantime, please take a look at the slides and download the resource: Developing Food Systems Plans: Considerations for Getting Started
Participants indicated which of these considerations they have experience with.
