Roundtable Outcomes
As a result of participating in this roundtable participants will:
Leave this session feeling more empowered and confident in the power of their own story/experiences!
Find shared understanding and common experiences with other folks in the room.
Leave with direct action steps for how they can support land access policies right now.
Gain increased knowledge of the issues of beginning farmers.
Have increased knowledge of local efforts to support land access for farmers of color in Michigan.
The Challenge
The policy issue we will address is land access for beginning farmers specifically in the farm bill, through bills like the Land Access Security and Opportunities Act, and share ways people can express their support for this bill. This session will open up conversation to other initiatives for land access, locally as well, like land reparations efforts.
The Impact
Land access is the top challenge for beginning farmers! Whether you are a farmer or not, you likely care about land use in your area, and are aware of increasing development. If nothing in policy addresses land access issues, we will continue losing farmland to development at an alarming rate and farmers entering the industry will not be able to sustain themselves. This is a great risk to the health and wellness of our communities.
