Why all students deserve access to language learning and how to implement inclusion in your classroom.
Welcome!
As a middle school and high school teacher, there were names every year that would show up on my roster and cause me alarm because I didn't know "how to teach that kid". There were times when I'd be only a few weeks into a semester and completely overwhelmed by how to support a student who was struggling. I did not know, as a first or even second year teacher, the nuance and issue facing students with disabilities accessing the foreign language classroom.
Many students with disabilities are simply excused from language requirements or told to "try it out" and not given reasonable accommodations. These students deserve the same access to language classes as their peers. There will be some individual cases were a waiver is the best path forward, but it should never be the default. I created these resources to help start or help continue conversations about best practice and creating a more inclusive world in the language classroom because, after all, language means community and community means all.
Language education is constantly evolving! Here you'll find resources to help teachers springboard inclusive practices in their own classrooms.
Parents are teachers too! Children take language home and these resources will help you feel confident stepping into advocacy for your child.
As students get older there is a shift from parent/guardian advocacy to self-advocacy! These resources will help that progression specifically in the language classroom.
There are so many other voices in the diversity and inclusion space. Here are some additional websites and books for you to continue the conversation.
