What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?

According to the CDC, "Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability that can cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges ("Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)", 2018). "

To Summarize:

The word 'spectrum' describes the range of difficulties that people on the autism spectrum may experience and the degree to which they may be affected.
While some can live an extraordinary or ordinary life some may have learning disabilities that need special interventions.
The main areas of difficulty include: social communication, social interaction and restricted or repetitive behaviors and interests.

What are the Characteristics of Children With Autism?

Communication Challenges

delayed language development or no development at all
tough time initiating and continuing conversation
repetitive use of different sayings or language (echolalia)
rare response to name
difficulty expressing needs

Social Challenges

difficulties forming and sustaining friendships
no to little enjoyment in sharing experiences with others
lack of social and emotional responsiveness
doesn't tend make eye contact
doesn't respond to facial expressions or body language

Behavioral Challenges

intense or focused interests
repetitive body movements (hand flapping, spinning etc...)
repetitive use of objects
unusual sensory interests (sniffing, feeling, etc...)
insistence on sticking to routines
sensory sensitivities (to vacuum, blender, etc...)
rarely has a strong response to pain
may be highly skilled in one area
has random tantrums
