This year's Unless Project has a few focus points
Waste: the reduction of waste, and how we can control the waste we create
Habitat: the conservation of habitats, and what we can do to help aid them
Policy: creating new policies to help protect wildlife
This year, for the 2024-2025 Unless Project, we have many plans for conservation within our town and community. Our focus animal for the contest this year is the McCords Box Turtle, a species that is native to China. These turtles are critically indangered due to pollution, loss of habitat and illeagle pet trade. Although this species is not close to our community, there are many different species of turtles that are facing similar challenges closer to home such as the bog turtle, wood turtle, spotted turte and the eastern box turtle.
We are continuing to run our rain barrels, and our greenhouse, collecting clothes donations, town gardens and more!
A new initiative we are putting into place this year is to collect any size plastic bottles with lids. We will upcycle these bottles into self-watering containers. This will save between 30-50% water each time we water plants as well as reduce waste that is going into our landfills. We are also creating a seed distribution to help restore habitats in our area and promote native species plantings. Students are hoping to put new policies in place within our community that helps wild life.
FUNDRAISING
This year, we would like to raise as much money so we can to continue to grow our sustainability within our school and community. We are selling t-shirts, sweatshirts. Any donations collected are going towards our efforts in supporting these endangered animals and our community projects!
