What is RtI?

RtI, or Response to Intervention, is a multi-tiered support system designed to ensure that all students receive the instruction and assistance they need to succeed—particularly in key academic areas like reading and math.

All students begin with Tier 1 instruction, which is the high-quality, standards-based teaching delivered in the general education classroom. This instruction is aligned with the state curriculum and is provided to all learners.

If a student demonstrates a need for additional support in a specific subject area (reading/math), they may receive Tier 2 intervention. This support typically takes place within the classroom and is provided by the student’s grade-level teacher in small, flexible groups. These groups can change as students’ needs evolve.

When a student requires more intensive support—especially if they are performing below grade level in reading or math—they may be considered for Tier 3 intervention. This level of support is delivered in a smaller group setting, often outside the classroom, to provide targeted instruction tailored to the student’s specific needs.

At MES, we refer to our Tier 3 groups as “Reading Club” and “Math Club.” These sessions offer focused instruction for 20–40 minutes per day and are designed to boost student growth in a supportive and engaging environment. Importantly, students do not miss their core Math or English Language Arts instruction during this time.

Our goal with RtI is to provide the right level of support at the right time so every student has the opportunity to thrive.
