This course provides students with a comprehensive understanding and hands-on experience in mentoring within a special education high school and/or transition classroom. Participants will learn and apply strategies for supporting students with diverse learning needs, fostering an inclusive and supportive educational environment. The course covers key aspects of special education, including individualized education plans (IEPs), behavior management, differentiated instruction, and effective communication techniques. Through direct mentorship and collaboration with experienced special education teachers, students will gain valuable skills in empathy, patience, and adaptability, preparing them for roles in education, health care, social services, and beyond.
Peer mentors are graded weekly on participation, journal entries, and projects completed within the scope of their mentoring assignment.
