Early Learning & Readiness
In our preschool and early childhood special education classrooms, we use The Creative Curriculum to guide learning through play, exploration, and hands-on activities that build important skills in all areas of development. To track each child’s growth, we use Teaching Strategies GOLD, an assessment tool that helps us observe and document progress so we can plan activities that best support each child’s needs and strengths. Both of these are part of SmartTeach by Teaching Strategies, an online system where we also communicate with families and share pictures of your child engaged in learning.
Second Step is a program rooted in social-emotional learning (SEL) that helps transform schools into supportive, successful learning environments uniquely equipped to encourage children to thrive. More than just a classroom curriculum, Second Step’s holistic approach helps create a more empathetic society by providing education professionals, families, and the larger community with tools to enable them to take an active role in the social-emotional growth and safety of today’s children. While The Creative Curriculum is our primary PreK curriculum, I also supplement it with Learning Without Tears activities that build writing readiness, early math, and literacy skills. These extra activities help strengthen important prerequisites and foundational learning, giving children the skills and confidence they need for kindergarten success.
