Foundations of Art
Course Overview
This year long class is the introductory course to the visual arts at Greely High School. It is designed to fulfill the graduation requirement for Visual and Performing Arts, but also prepares you for upper level art courses. You will learn about the Elements of Art and Principles of Design and how they are applied to creating pieces of art using different techniques and material. You will learn about a range of drawing materials to gain confidence in mark making. Initially, most work is related to design and drawing and eventually moves into traditional and contemporary art making media including watercolor, printmaking, acrylic paint, oil pastels, collage and clay. Students will draw from imagination and observation. Reflection and critique will be included throughout the curriculum along with some introduction to inspirational art history.
Homework
You will need to have a basic art supply kit for completing all homework assignments. The list includes: scissors, watercolors, brushes, colored pencils, pencils, pens, tape, glue and magazines for collage or mixed media work. You will also need to get a Homework Sketchbook that you will pass in when homework is due. Homework sketchbooks can be purchased at most local departments stores, pharmacies, and art supply stores. It is required that sketch pads are 9 x 12 or 8 ½ x 11 only and are spiral bound either on the top or side. The pads should have at least 30 pages and should last the year.
You will be expected to turn in one quality artwork every month. Do not wait until the last minute to complete these. The reason I give this time is to ensure that if you get sick before the due date, then at least most work is complete.

Expectations
• Arrive to class on time and keep talking to a minimum during studio time, you are here to work.
• Attendance: I take attendance every class. If you are absent, I will expect to see and sign an blue slip (from the office) the next time I see you. If you don’t have an blue slip, I will send you to the office to get one. If your absence is unexcused, I will send an email home. After 3 unexcused absences, you will be required to stay for a classroom detention after school for 20 minutes. If you have a 4th unexcused absence, you will get an office referral and serve an office detention.
• Cell phones: I don’t want to see them. That being said, if you have an emergency talk to me.
• Music is controlled by me and will be turned on and off according to the needs of the class. At this point, using your headphones during studio time will not be allowed, but we will work up to that.
• Clean up after yourself. Consider the amount of time you need to save for clean up. This is a shared space, we are all using it, show respect and leave materials cleaner than you found them.
• The shelves in the entryway are where your portfolios will be stored. When you are getting your portfolio at the beginning of class and putting it back at the end of class, please be respectful of other students’ work. DO NOT TOUCH PORTFOLIOS FROM OTHER CLASSES.
• If you need to borrow materials you MUST check with me first, and sign them out.
• Take a risk! Be brave! I am going to give you some guidance but also some choice in this class, so challenge yourself and allow yourself to have FUN!
