For quite a while now, MS.88's green team has had a goal to . . .
. . . promote awareness, to bring about changes that will have positive effects on the environment and to help people in our community recognize that there are many things that each and everyone of us can do to make a difference. We strongly believe that it is not only politicians or celebrities that can make a difference in the future of our world, but each and every citizen that impacts it. Our goal is to incite change in those around us, and ultimately provide movement that can save our planet. In other words, the people that destroyed our planet can work together to save it.

Your home is in danger. Right now.
Imagine that your house was on fire. Would you panic? Would you race for water? Would you call 911?
Or would you recline, throw some fuel on the fire, and pretend not to see the flames so high they block your vision? I think you know which. The thing is: this isn't a metaphor. We live on earth, our home, which we are destroying. Your home really is on fire!
You are living this story, so we, as the world, need get up and do something to save our aflame home.
Visit our Climate Crisis page to learn more about authors who are grabbing water pails, learn about companies that are throwing fuel on the fire, and learn how you can begin to pick your own pail up.
When does climate change become climate crisis?
Xiye Bastida, who "always calls it a crisis, never climate change.", according to PBS, believes, "We need to change our culture and change our narrative. For too long, the narrative has been that this is some big distant thing that will happen in the year 2100. But pollution is here. Heatwaves are here. Wildfires are here. Melting ice caps are here. Floods are here. Category 5 hurricanes are here. It’s here already.”
It's here already. What did it take for Bastida to see this?
Bastida grew up in the town of San Pedro Tultepec, where her indigenous Otomi people follow the belief that "if you take care of the Earth, it will take care of you." (PBS, Marlene Cimons) Bastida is passionate about this. "“Earth is our home,” she said. “It gives you air, water and shelter. Everything we need. All it asks is that we protect it.”" (PBS)
When Bastida was 12, six years ago (she is currently 18), her hometown experienced heavy droughts followed by flooding, highly irregular weather patterns. She soon figured out that this was not normal. Her home was being injured.
So she fought.
Bastida is now the leader of the Fridays for Future, a group of young climate strikers inspired by Greta Thunberg's efforts. Bastida continues to fight for her home, and yours too.
What will it take for her message to spread?
