Dear Students and Families,
Welcome back to school!!!! We are so happy you have selected our blended learning program. We look forward to your child joining us in school following our AA-BB-CC program. As we have discussed in town halls over the summer, the safety of our students and staff is our number one priority. With that understanding in mind, please review the following safety expectations and responsibilities with your family this evening. Thank you.
Safety Reminders:
1. All students in Group A, B, or C must complete the NYCDOE Health Screener every morning before coming to school on their scheduled date. The NYCDOE Health Screener is an online 4 question survey families will complete with their child each morning before their child goes to school. The NYCDOE Health Screener can be found online here: https://healthscreening.schools.nyc/ The screener may be translated in to the family’s language of choice. A link to the screener is also available on our website in the STUDENT section. Please bookmark the page because your child will be accessing it every morning they are scheduled to come to the school building,
· If a child answers “YES” to any of the four questions listed on the screener the child cannot come to school that day. This is very important in keeping us all safe.
· Each morning at student entrance all students scheduled for in-person learning are expected to display on their phone to an MS 217 staff member the image or a printed hard copy that they have completed the NYCDOE Health Screener prior to coming to school that day. The screener must be completed every time the student is scheduled to go to the school building.
· If the student forgets to complete the screener or is unable to display the completed health screener on their phone or a hard copy, please do not worry. A staff member will ask your child the same four questions found on the NYCDOE Health Screener and will then take the child’s temperature. If the child answers YES to any of the four questions on the NYCDOE Health Screener or if the child has a temperature at or above 100 degrees the child will be escorted to our health room. The child will be evaluated by our school nurse. If it is determined the child is displaying COVID19 symptoms, or if the child has answered YES to any of the four questions on the NYCDOE Health Screener the child’s family may be called and may be required to pick the child up. Families are reminded to please be sure they are sending someone that is listed on the student’s Blue Emergency Card to pick the child up. We will not release the child to someone if they are not listed on the Blue Emergency Card.
2. Students must properly wear a mask once they enter our school grounds. Students may remove their mask briefly when they eat breakfast and lunch. Students may wear a mask from home. Students will be provided a mask by our school if they do not have one.
3. Students may wear medical gloves but are not required to do so.
4. All students must demonstrate social distancing by remaining 6 feet apart at all times. Student socialization that does not comply with our social distancing expectations will not be permitted.
5. Students may enter our school building only through their identified door for which they are programmed to enter. All students have received documentation in the mail and emails to their school Gmail account informing them of their assigned entrance door. At the end of the school day students will be escorted by their teacher out of the same door they accessed to enter the school building.
6. Students must use the proper one-way staircase when ascending and descending the staircase
7. Students must social distance when on the staircase.
8. Students must follow the one way directional when in the hall ways.
9. Students must consistently sanitize their hands using our hand sanitizing stations in classrooms
10. Students that arrive after entrance doors have closed at 8:30AM must use the Late Entrance Door accessed through our school yard. Students that arrive after 9AM must use the Main Entrance doors of our school.
Thank you for reviewing this document with your child. We look forward to a great, safe school year together.
Respectfully
Principal Burns
Here at Middle School 217Q we have a student dress code policy. The dress code consists of a collared polo shirt (navy blue or grey) with our school logo, and either navy blue or khaki pants. Girls may choose to wear a navy blue or khaki skirt/skort.
There are many benefits in having our students wear a uniform to school everyday:
Promotes a more effective learning environment
Fosters school unity and pride
Improves student performance
Fosters self-esteem
Eliminates label competition
Simplifies the dressing process in the morning
Teaches students appropriate dress and decorum in their “work” place
Help to improve student conduct and discipline
Understanding all the benefits wearing a school uniform lends to our school environment any student who is out of uniform will receive a phone call home to inform the parent and may be subjected to stay for detention.
Parents and students purchase the polo shirt from Needleheads located at: 8801 Myrtle Ave, Glendale, NY 11385, phone number (718) 850 - 4252. Parents may also purchase the polo shirt from any available manufacturer; however, the school logo must be displayed. No designer emblems are permitted on the polo shirt. Needleheads is the only store in our community that will embroider the polo shirt with the school logo. For navy blue or khaki pants/skirt/skort parents may shop at any school uniform store. Cookies provides a 10% discount for M.S. 217Q students. Cookies is located at: 166-21 Jamaica Avenue, Jamaica NY 11432.
Students must have their ID cards daily.
Students can download the mobile app titled https://stocardapp.com/ then scan their ID if they wish.
The purpose of the ID is to permit all school staff and school safety agents the quick ability to identify intruders. Students not carrying their ID cards are in violation of our school safety procedures and create an unsafe school environment. We are grateful to you for your support and cooperation.
